Otay vs Candle

Last checked: October 28, 2026, against each app’s own website and App Store listing.

Candle is a many-featured couples app: questions, games, daily photo prompts, thumb kisses, date ideas and a streak. Photos are one part of it, described as snapshots like BeReal, just for the two of you. Otay does only the photo part, and does it as a journal.

In their words: Candle (Candle: Couples & Relationship) describes itself as a couples game for staying close, with 1-minute daily rituals. Otay: Otay is a private photo journal app for two people, on iPhone. Every day both of you get the same small photo quest and answer it with a back-camera photo and a selfie, a caption and a place, and your two answers sit side by side in a shared journal only the two of you can see, with a photo calendar, a map, throwbacks, a kind streak map, a wardrobe for your two little characters and Home Screen and Lock Screen widgets.

We make Otay. We have tried to be fair, and every fact about Candle below comes from the sources listed at the end. If something is out of date, tell us at hi@otay.app and we will fix it.

Candle is the better pick if

  • You want conversation starters, games and challenges as well as photos.
  • You want thumb kisses to feel a vibration from far away.
  • You want local date ideas in the same app.
  • You want an app with thousands of reviews behind it.

Otay is the better pick if

  • Photos are what you want, with room to keep both of your views of the same moment.
  • You want a calm app with a single daily thing to do, not a menu of activities.
  • You want one clear paid plan, shared by both of you, and a free plan with no ads.

The short version

Candle is the broader app, and a good fit if you want games and questions with a photo prompt. Otay is narrower on purpose: a photo journal for two, without the rest.
