Last checked against the app and the App Store: October 26, 2026

Otay is a photo journal app for couples, on iPhone. Every day you and your partner get the same small photo quest, you each answer it, and both answers land side by side in a journal only the two of you can see.

What a daily photo app for couples is

It is a small shared habit: one photo each, every day, in a private space for two. People look for it when they want something lighter than a chat thread and more lasting than a camera roll. You may hear it called a couples photo journal, a photo a day for couples, or a BeReal for couples.

The apps differ in what they ask. Some ask for whatever you are doing, some give you a prompt, some are one part of a bigger set of couple games. Otay gives you both a prompt and keeps the result as a journal.

How Otay’s daily photo works

  1. A small photo quest arrives, the same one for both of you. Not feeling it? Roll another.
  2. Each of you answers with the dual camera: the back camera for the moment, the front camera for your face.
  3. Add a caption and a place if you like.
  4. Your two halves hang side by side as one memory, in a journal, a photo calendar and a map, with throwbacks like one year ago today.

Around that sit a few quiet extras: a kind streak that counts the days you both answered and never takes anything away, quick taps like Hey!, Miss you and Hug?, notes you write or draw, Home Screen and Lock Screen widgets, and two little characters you dress up with coins earned from quests.

Private to two

Only the person you pair with can see your memories. There is no feed, no followers, no likes and no ads on any plan. Photos are encrypted in transit and at rest by our storage providers; this is not end-to-end encryption, and our privacy page explains exactly what is stored where.

You both need the app

Otay is for exactly two people, so you both install it on an iPhone (iOS 17 or later). One of you taps Send invite, the other enters the code, and you are paired. There is no Android app yet and no web version of the journal.

Long distance, or living together

For a long-distance couple, the same quest on both screens gives you something shared to notice each day, wherever you are. A quest that stays open until you answer it means time zones do not matter. For a couple who live together, it is a nudge to look at an ordinary day, and a record you will be glad of later. Our longer guide to long-distance relationship apps goes through the other options too.

What it costs

Otay is free to download and use every day, with no ads. The free plan shows your last 30 days of memories, and always at least your newest 15. Older memories are locked, never deleted. Otay Premium is optional, keeps every memory forever and adds more ways to style your prints; one subscription covers both of you.

How it differs from BeReal and Locket

BeReal is a social app for sharing with friends. Locket sends instant photos to the Home Screens of up to 20 friends. Otay has no friends list: it is only the two of you, with one shared quest a day and everything kept as a journal. If you want a stream of spontaneous photos from a group, those apps are built for it. Questions

What is a daily photo app for couples?

It is an app where two partners each share a photo every day, in a space no one else can see. There is no public feed, no followers and no likes. The point is a small shared habit and a record of your ordinary days that you can look back on.

How does Otay's daily photo work?

Every day you both get the same small photo quest. Each of you answers with one tap of the camera: the back camera for the moment and the front camera for your face, plus an optional caption and place. The two answers sit side by side as one memory in your shared journal.

Do we both need Otay?

Yes. Otay is a journal for exactly two people, so you both need the app on an iPhone (iOS 17 or later). One of you sends an invite, the other enters the code, and your phones are paired. There is no Android app yet.

Is it good for a long-distance relationship?

Yes. You get the same quest wherever you are, so you see the same prompt through two different windows, in two time zones if need be. Quick taps like Hey! and Miss you, notes you write or draw, and widgets keep the other person on your Home Screen. If one of you has not answered yet, the quest simply stays open: there is no clock.

Is it good if we live together?

Yes. Living together is where days blur. A daily quest gets you both noticing ordinary things, and a year on, the throwbacks bring them back.

Who can see our photos?

Only the two of you. Photos are encrypted in transit and at rest by Otay's storage providers. That is not end-to-end encryption. There are no ads, we never sell your data and we do not train any model on your photos.

What does it cost?

Otay is free to download and use every day, with no ads. The free plan shows your last 30 days of memories (and always your newest 15); older ones are locked, never deleted. Otay Premium is optional, shows every memory and adds more ways to style prints. On the US App Store, yearly is $69.99 with a 14-day free trial and monthly is $14.99. One subscription covers both of you.

How is Otay different from BeReal?

BeReal is a social app built around sharing with friends. Otay has no friends list at all: it is only for two people, it asks you both the same quest instead of asking for a random snapshot, and it keeps everything as a journal with a calendar, a map and throwbacks.

How is Otay different from Locket?

Locket sends photos to the Home Screen widgets of up to 20 friends, instantly and with no prompt. Otay is for one other person, asks you both the same daily quest, and keeps the answers as a journal. If you want spontaneous photos all day, Locket is built for that.

Is this the same as Otty or other apps called Otay?

No. Otay is the couples photo journal at otay.app, listed on the App Store as Couples Photo Journal · Otay. It has nothing to do with other apps or businesses that have a similar name.
